High in the Saraguro mountains of Loja, Hacienda La Papaya has quickly become one of Ecuador’s most celebrated farms. Founded in 2009 by Juan Peña, the farm is dedicated to producing exceptional coffees through variety-specific cultivation, agronomic precision, and experimental processing methods. Typica Mejorado — the variety behind this lot — is known for its tropical sweetness, high florality, and delicate body, and has earned acclaim on competition stages worldwide.

La Papaya is more than just a farm. It’s also a research hub for the region. Juan and his team share resources, seedlings, and agricultural expertise with neighboring producers, lifting up the quality of the entire community. The farm employs local workers year-round, with 80% of staff being women, and provides fair, formal employment with social security benefits.

This particular lot is part of La Papaya’s Special Release Collection, designed to showcase the unique character of Typica Mejorado. After careful harvesting and selection, the cherries undergo yeast-inoculated fermentation to heighten complexity before drying for 30 days. The result is a refined, expressive coffee with bright fruit, floral aromatics, and a silky structure, a true reflection of the innovation and dedication behind Hacienda La Papaya.
